Two 8 by 10 inch glass negatives join to form this panorama of the Whirlpool Rapids on the Niagara River, where the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge crosses the gorge with the Michigan Central Cantilever Bridge rising behind it. Railroad spans like these linked the United States and Canada over water that runs fast and rough below, and seeing them together in one frame shows how heavily the gorge was built up by the late 1800s. Detroit Publishing Co. issued the views around 1905, and the cracked left negative, taped to its backing glass, is a reminder of how fragile these plates are.
