Few views of the Niagara gorge capture the rapids and the falls together as fully as this wide sepia panorama. The long format lets the eye travel from the churning white water upstream to the cataract itself, a sweep that single-frame views of the period rarely managed. Sepia toning was a common finish for photographs of this era, lending the mist and rock a warm, aged cast. Niagara was among the first places in North America where people organized to protect scenery from commercial development, and images like this one helped build the public appetite for preserving it as a park.
