Few views of Niagara Falls capture the scale of the gorge quite like a wide panoramic frame, which lets the eye travel across the full width of the cataract and the churning water below. Black-and-white photography suited the subject well, reducing the falls to tones of mist, rock and foam and drawing attention to the sheer volume of water moving over the brink. The Niagara region became one of the most photographed natural sites in North America during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, when visitors arrived by rail and photographers sold views to a growing tourist trade. Panoramic prints of this kind were prized for showing the falls as a whole, a record of a landmark that was already drawing crowds from around the world.
