Few views of Niagara Falls are as wide as this one, which takes in the whole sweep of water from a railed overlook path rather than a single cataract. The falls sit on the Niagara River along the New York and Ontario border, and by the late 1800s they had become one of the most visited natural sites in North America, drawing tourists by rail and steamer. State park grounds on the American side were set aside in the 1880s to protect the cliffs and rapids from commercial development, and paths like this one were built so visitors could approach the edge safely. The railings and the long, stretched composition hint at how the panorama was meant to be taken in slowly, one stretch of falling water at a time.
