Seen from the New York side, this panoramic view takes in both the American Falls and the rushing rapids that run toward them, a stretch of the Niagara River that has drawn sightseers since the early 1800s. The sepia toning gives the scene an old-fashioned warmth, and the wide format captures how the water churns over the rocks before it plunges. By the late 1800s, Niagara had become one of the most famous natural wonders in North America, and photographers like these helped spread its image to people who would never see it firsthand. The state park that now protects the area was created in 1885, making it one of the oldest in the nation.
