The Niagara River gorge is the detail that sets this view apart: it looks downstream over the churning rapids that carve the narrow canyon between the falls and the lower river. Sepia tones were the common finish for photographs of this era, and the panoramic format let photographers take in the full sweep of the walls and white water at once. Visitors came to the gorge in growing numbers during the late 1800s, drawn by the power of the rapids and the dramatic scenery that the river had cut over thousands of years. Look closely at the rock layers and the shoreline paths, which show how the gorge was first opened to tourists.
