The falls and the rapids above them are the focus here, shown in a wide panoramic sweep that takes in the full width of the cataract and the churning white water leading toward the brink. Niagara was among the first natural sights in North America to draw serious tourism, and by the late 1800s the gorge had become a destination for travelers arriving by rail and steamboat. Sepia tinting was the common look of photographs from that era, and panoramic formats let photographers capture the scale of the river that single-frame views could not. Notice how the rapids seem to pour toward the edge, a reminder of the river's steady erosion of the gorge over thousands of years.
