Water churns through a narrow channel beneath the high walls of the gorge, the cliffs rising on either side of the frame in the wide sweep of a panoramic view. The rapids below the falls were a constant draw for nineteenth- and early twentieth-century visitors, who came to see how the Niagara River broke into white water after its plunge over the escarpment. Panoramic prints like this one let viewers take in the full width of the gorge at once, showing the scale of the rock and the force of the current that carved it over thousands of years.
