The plate is a half-plate daguerreotype, gold toned to deepen its tones, with the number 53 scratched into its face. The record describes it as a copy of an original probably made by Platt D. Babbitt, a daguerreotypist who photographed the falls in the 1850s, and it was produced in Mathew Brady's studio. It later passed to the U.S. War College, which received it in 1920. Mid-century visitors to Niagara would have found a busy tourist destination, and the plate preserves how the cataract looked to them before later hydroelectric projects altered the river.
