Rather than a close view of the cataract, this photochrom shows the falls from a wide vantage, taking in the full sweep of the American and Canadian cataracts at once. It was made around 1898 by the Detroit Photographic Company, whose process hand-colored a tinted photochrom from a set of lithographic stones, producing the soft, saturated color typical of the firm's views. The company issued it under catalog number 53257, and this copy survives in an album the firm assembled as a working catalog for its office. Such views were sold to tourists and travelers, who valued the tinted images as souvenirs of a site already famous as a destination.
