Prospect Point, on the American side of the Niagara River, is the vantage this color print takes in, looking out over the falls toward the Canadian shore. The image is a photochrom, a process that the Detroit Publishing Company used to turn photographs into color prints by layering hand-prepared stone plates, one for each hue. The company issued its photochroms commercially around the turn of the twentieth century, and this one dates to the years between 1898 and 1912, when tourism to Niagara was booming and rail travel brought visitors to the gorge by the trainload. Its cataloging also notes a copyright deposit, a reminder that the publisher registered its views for legal protection.
