Prospect Point, on the American side of the Niagara River, gave visitors one of the closest views of the falls' Canadian-side rapids and the Horseshoe Falls beyond. This 8 x 10 inch glass dry plate negative was made by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country in the 1890s and early 1900s to document scenic places for sale as prints and postcards. The company's catalog from 1901 helps date the plate to the late 1890s. By then Niagara was already one of the most photographed sites in North America, drawing tourists by rail and steamer, and the Detroit company's work captures how that crowd experienced the cataract.
