Horseshoe Fall, the crescent-shaped cataract on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls, is the subject of this color print from about 1901. The Detroit Publishing Company issued it as one of many photochrom views of American and Canadian scenery, sold as souvenirs and travel pictures in the years around 1900. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, built up color from several lithographic stones, giving the spray and the water a soft, painted quality. The print shows how the falls had become a major tourist destination, a place visitors wanted to see and remember in color.
