Looking north from the Queenston heights, this view takes in the town of Queenston and the Niagara River as it runs toward the falls and the lake beyond. The high bluff gave travelers a rare overview of the river gorge, which carves a deep channel through the escarpment between Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Queenston was the site of the 1812 Battle of Queenston Heights during the War of 1812, and the ridge's commanding position made it strategically important. Views like this one were popular with nineteenth-century tourists, who came to see the river and the falls from vantage points along the gorge.
