The panorama shows the rapids of the Niagara River as seen from the platform of the Niagara River Elevator Company, a vantage point that gives the long, wide format its sweep of churning white water and rock. The print is a gelatin silver photograph of about 1912, made by William A. Drennan and deposited with the U.S. Copyright Office that September, which is why it survives in the Library of Congress. The rapids run for a mile or more above the falls, where the river drops sharply through the gorge, and the cliffs that frame the view show the steep walls that shaped the river's course.
