Unlike the Niagara Falls views this board usually holds, this color lithograph shows a working waterfront in Buffalo, New York, where an elevator named Niagara rises among the ships along the harbor. Buffalo grew into one of the great grain-handling ports on the Great Lakes after the Erie Canal linked it to eastern markets, and by the 1870s its tall storage elevators were a defining feature of the shoreline. The sheet was printed by Sage, Sons & Co. of Buffalo, a firm that produced many commercial views of the city, and it captures a busy period of shipping and grain trade.
