The name on this color lithograph, the Niagara elevator, points to one of the grain storage houses that gave Buffalo its reputation as a Great Lakes port. By the 1870s, grain arriving from the Midwest by lake and canal was lifted into these tall buildings and moved out again by ship, and the print pairs the elevator with the vessels that carried its cargo. Sage, Sons & Co. was a Buffalo lithography firm, so the work also reflects the city's commercial printing trade. Prints like this were often sold as views of local business and industry, and today they record how the waterfront looked during the period.
