Buffalo, only a short distance from the cataract, was a natural place to publish a color view of Niagara Falls, and this chromolithograph was issued there by Crawford & Parsons around 1870. The color printing came from The Sage, Sons & Co., and the copyright entry filed in Washington suggests the publisher expected it to sell widely. The record ties the subject to both New York and Ontario, reflecting the falls' location on the international border. Colored lithographs like this gave people who could not travel to the falls an affordable picture of the famous cataract.
