Among the early printed views of Niagara Falls, this 1790 etching appeared opposite page 387 of the July issue of the *Massachusetts Magazine*, published in Boston by Isaiah Thomas and Ebenezer T. Andrews. The drawing is credited only to "del.," with S. Hill named as engraver. At that date the falls lay near the edge of settled territory, so most readers would have known them through travel accounts and secondhand descriptions rather than by sight. The plate shows how a monthly periodical could bring a distant natural wonder to an American readership.
