This half-plate daguerreotype is a copy of an earlier plate, probably the work of Platt D. Babbitt, a daguerreotypist who photographed the falls in the 1850s. The record credits Mathew Brady's studio and notes the gold-toned surface, a Rinhart hallmark, and the number 53 scratched into the face of the plate, details that help place it among the commercial views sold to travelers. By 1860, Niagara was one of the most photographed sites in America, drawn by its size and its fame as a destination. The copy was transferred to the U.S. War College in 1920, which is how it came to the Library of Congress.
