Drawn on the spot by Captain James Graham and engraved by F. C. Lewis, this wide etching shows Niagara Falls from the Canadian shore, a vantage that appealed to British travelers and print buyers of the period. Lewis held the title of engraver to Queen Victoria, and the sheet's great width suits the sweep of the cataract and the gorge below. Because this is a proof before letters, the impression lacks the printed title and imprint that finished copies carried, which makes it useful to researchers tracing how the plate was issued.
