Seen from the Canadian shore, the falls appear here as a sweeping panorama, with the broad curve of the Horseshoe Falls stretching across the middle of the sheet. Engraved views like this were a staple of the nineteenth century, when Niagara ranked among the most visited natural wonders in North America and travelers arrived by steamboat and stagecoach to see the cataract for themselves. Artists working from the Canadian side often included the surrounding cliffs, mist, and small figures on the ledges to convey scale, and that deliberate sense of awe is worth noticing. The wide format also shows how the gorge below the falls was framed for viewers who would never stand exactly where the artist did.
