Fifth Avenue in New York on Easter in 1911 was the setting for the city's famous holiday promenade, when churchgoers in new spring clothes strolled the avenue after services. The George Grantham Bain Collection came from the Bain News Service, a photo agency that sold pictures to newspapers and recorded its captions on glass negatives in the early 1910s. The title comes from those original caption records, which were not independently verified, so the exact stretch of the avenue is best read as approximate. Easter parades drew large crowds, and the elaborate hats and dresses visible in such street scenes offer a useful view of urban fashion before the First World War.
