Church steps on Fifth Avenue offered a good vantage point for the city's Easter Parade, and this glass negative shows spectators gathered there to watch the passing crowds. The parade was a long-standing New York custom in which churchgoers strolled the avenue after Easter services to show off new hats, gloves and spring clothes, and it drew onlookers as well as participants. The Bain News Service, the photo agency behind this collection, documented many city events for newspapers, but the record gives no firm date, and the title comes from caption information that has not been verified.
