Fifth Avenue in Manhattan was the stage for the city's famous Easter Parade, when churchgoers strolled the avenue in new hats and spring finery after Sunday services. The glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, from a news photography service that sold pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. Its title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact date is uncertain, but the scene reflects the custom at its peak, when the avenue doubled as a public showcase for fashion.
