Fifth Avenue in New York was the heart of the city's Easter Parade, when churchgoers strolled the avenue in new spring clothes after Easter services. This 1912 glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news pictures to newspapers in the early twentieth century. By then, showing off new hats and finery on Easter Sunday was a long-established custom, and it drew photographers to the avenue each spring. The title comes from caption information recorded by the agency and has not been independently verified, so the exact spot on the avenue is worth checking.
