Fifth Avenue in New York City, on Easter Sunday in 1912, is the setting for this glass negative, a stretch of street long tied to the city's holiday promenade. After church services, churchgoers and well-dressed residents walked the avenue in new spring clothes and elaborate hats, a custom that drew crowds throughout the early twentieth century. The George Grantham Bain News Service, which made this negative, sold pictures of such events to newspapers and magazines, so the image records a shared civic ritual as much as one moment. Look closely at the hats and outfits, which show how seasonal dress signaled both prosperity and pride.
