Fifth Avenue in New York City is the setting for this 1911 view of the Easter crowds, when churchgoers and strollers filled the avenue in new spring clothes. The Easter Parade was a long-standing custom in which people walked the avenue after Sunday services to show off hats, gowns and suits. The picture comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, made from a glass negative by the Bain News Service, a New York agency that supplied news photographs to newspapers. The title comes from caption information the agency recorded and has not been independently verified, so the scene is best read as typical of the holiday.
