Turner Ashby was a Confederate cavalry commander from the Shenandoah Valley, and this engraved portrait shows him as he was usually remembered: a dashing horseman whose reputation grew quickly during the first year of the war. Ashby rode with Stonewall Jackson's campaigns in 1862, using his mounted troops to screen Confederate movements and harass Union forces across the Valley. He was killed in action near Harrisonburg, Virginia, in June 1862, and his death was felt as a serious loss by Southern commanders and civilians alike. Engravings like this one were widely reproduced in the early years of the conflict, when newspapers and printsellers circulated images of officers to a public hungry for heroes.
