This engraved portrait shows Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, whose military fame from the Battle of New Orleans in 1815 carried him into politics. Jackson served two terms from 1829 to 1837, a period that brought expanded voting rights for white men and the Indian Removal Act of 1830. Engraved likenesses like this one were widely reproduced in the nineteenth century, when printed portraits were among the main ways citizens saw their leaders. The caption card gives the engraver as W.A. Staiszewske, but the date is not recorded and the attribution remains unverified.
