Shown in head and shoulders and turned to the left, this portrait presents Andrew Jackson, the seventh president of the United States, in the formal, composed style common to his era's likenesses. Jackson served from 1829 to 1837 and was known as "Old Hickory," a frontier lawyer and soldier whose victory at New Orleans in 1815 made him a national hero. His presidency was also marked by the Indian Removal Act of 1830 and the bitter fight over the Second Bank of the United States, controversies that still shape how he is remembered. The record dates this print to about 1946, so it is most likely a later copy of an earlier likeness rather than a portrait made during Jackson's lifetime.
