Theodor Schwann appears here in head-and-shoulders profile, turned to the left, in this 1857 lithograph. The German physiologist shares credit with botanist Matthias Schleiden for cell theory, the principle that living tissue is built from cells, set out in 1838 and 1839. His other discoveries include pepsin, a stomach enzyme, and the cells that wrap nerve fibers, now called Schwann cells. Portraits like this one helped spread the faces of researchers whose work was reshaping biology.
