Alan Paton, the South African novelist and anti-apartheid campaigner, is shown here in a head-and-shoulders view facing left, with his autograph added to the print. The portrait dates to 1950, the year Paton's novel "Cry, the Beloved Country" was published, and it was a book that drew wide international attention to the racial injustices of South Africa under the new apartheid laws. The autograph gives the picture a personal touch, marking it as a keepsake rather than a purely studio record.
