The Hermitage, the Nashville plantation home of Andrew Jackson, is the subject here, shown as it looked in 1947. Jackson, the seventh president, bought the property in 1804 and lived there until his death in 1845, and the house became a shrine to his memory after he was gone. The original house was built in the early 1820s, and the 1947 view captures the Greek Revival columns and the grounds that visitors still walk today. Photographs like this one were often made to document historic sites that were drawing growing numbers of tourists in the decades after World War II.
