President Calvin Coolidge and his wife, Grace Goodhue Coolidge, stand among members of the Association of Advertising Men in this 1924 group portrait, a rare moment when the couple appear with a private business organization rather than a government delegation. Coolidge had succeeded to the presidency after Warren G. Harding's death in 1923, and in 1924 he was preparing to run for election in his own right. The photograph comes from the National Photo Company Collection, a commercial studio whose work documented Washington figures and events throughout the 1910s and 1920s. Its formal arrangement reflects the conventions of the era's group portraiture.
