Three men at work in a pipe-making shop are the focus here, with the carving of pipe bowls as the operation that the record highlights. Underwood & Underwood, a firm that issued large numbers of stereographs for home stereoscope viewers in the early 1900s, produced this view, and its paired images were meant to give a sense of depth when seen through a viewer. By about 1908, briar wood from Mediterranean root burl had become a popular material for smoking pipes in the United States, and workshops like this one shaped rough blocks by hand. The picture offers a useful record of ordinary manufacturing before machines took over much of that work.
