Ten portraits of Black men share one sheet, which sets this chromolithograph apart from the single-subject portraits of its era. The group includes Frederick Douglass, Richard Allen, and Henry Highland Garnet alongside men who had recently held federal office, among them Blanche K. Bruce, Joseph H. Rainey, and P. B. S. Pinchback. Published in New York around 1883, the sheet presents them as a roster of achievement at a time when Reconstruction-era gains were being rolled back. Its title, "Distinguished Colored Men," reflects the period's language for the subjects and the audience it was meant to reach.
