Here the British 8th Hussars, a light cavalry regiment, are gathered as a group in the Crimea, where the regiment had served since the war began in 1854. The photographer, Roger Fenton, reached the Crimea in March 1855 and made a large body of images of British officers, soldiers, and camp life there, among the earliest photographs taken of a war. This salted paper print is one of his portraits from that year, when the 8th Hussars were part of the army besieging Sevastopol. Its sharp group arrangement shows how Fenton used the stiff conventions of studio portraiture to present a regiment as orderly and disciplined.
