Swimmers in the surf, set against men in the trenches, is what separates this Australian recruiting poster from others of its time. Its title asks the question directly: it is nice in the surf, but what about the men in the trenches? Printed in Sydney in 1917 by William Brooks & Co., the color lithograph belongs to the wartime effort to bring men into the Australian forces, when enlistment was voluntary and appeals like this one tried to turn easy comfort into a sense of duty. Artist D.H. Souter pits the beach against the battlefield, asking the viewer to weigh one against the other.
