Fight or pay" sets this 1915 color lithograph apart from many wartime appeals, because it presents a donation as a direct alternative to military service. It was issued for the Canadian Patriotic Fund, a charity founded in 1914 to support the wives, children, and other dependents of men who enlisted. Its slogans contrast women sending their men with men giving their lives, then turn the question on the viewer: what are you doing for the cause of freedom? Posters like this were a common tool of wartime fundraising, when voluntary subscriptions helped sustain families while the war asked so much of the men overseas.
