Printed entirely in text, this 1915 lithograph poses a single question, "Can I afford to pay for freedom?", and answers it by setting Canada's position against Belgium's, which German forces had occupied since 1914 and which wartime propaganda held up as a symbol of lost liberty. Its call to subscribe to the Canadian Patriotic Fund refers to a scheme begun in August 1914 to support the families of men serving overseas, and it relied on public subscription rather than government funds. The poster turns that charity into a civic duty, asking those at home to contribute to the war effort as directly as the soldiers did.
