A shop window displaying men's clothing in Paris is the subject here, with reflections in the glass showing the street behind the photographer. Eugène Atget made thousands of such images between about 1898 and 1927, recording the older city for artists, architects and libraries as many of its streets were being rebuilt. Berenice Abbott, who acquired much of his archive after his death and championed his work, published this print in a 1956 New York portfolio of twenty of his photographs. The reflections layer the merchandise with the life of the street, a feature that makes his storefront pictures especially worth studying.
