A portrait of John Quincy Adams, the sixth president, this engraving reproduces a painting by Asher B. Durand, an artist who trained as an engraver before becoming a leading figure of the Hudson River School. The print was engraved by H.W. Smith. Adams held the presidency from 1825 to 1829, then returned to public life as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, where he became a vocal opponent of the gag rule that blocked antislavery petitions. The card does not record a date, so the print's exact year is uncertain.
