This engraving shows Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States, who grew up in Kinderhook, New York, and built his career in the state's Democratic politics before serving under Andrew Jackson and then winning the presidency in 1836. The print reproduces a painting by Ezra Ames, an Albany portrait painter, so the image reflects an earlier likeness translated into engraved form for wider circulation. Because the caption card records no date, the exact moment of its creation is uncertain, but engravings like this were widely sold during Van Buren's public career. Notice how the engraver's line work conveys the sitter's features and dress in the conventions of its period.
