Martin Frobisher, the English sea captain and explorer, is the subject here, and this engraving presents him as a figure of the Elizabethan age. Frobisher made three voyages in the 1570s searching for a Northwest Passage to Asia, bringing back dark ore that his backers hoped held gold, though it proved worthless. He later served against the Spanish Armada in 1588. The caption card gives no date, so the print's exact year of production is uncertain, but portrait engravings of Elizabethan navigators were often produced long after their subjects' deaths, drawn from earlier sources.
