Simeon D. Fess was an Ohio congressman and later a U.S. senator, and this c1922 portrait catches him at the height of his public career. Fess served in the House of Representatives from 1913 to 1923 before moving to the Senate, where he held a seat until 1935. He was a Republican known for his interest in education and for his role as an early champion of Ohio's Antioch College, which he had attended as a student. The print comes from the Library of Congress's Prints and Photographs Division, so it is a useful record of how Washington's political figures were photographed in the years after World War I.
