Jacob Epstein, the New York-born sculptor, is the subject of this portrait, dated to about 1934. By then he had lived and worked in Britain for nearly three decades after moving to London in 1905. He became one of the most debated artists of his day, admired for his bold carved heads and portrait busts and attacked by critics who found his modernist simplifications shocking. The picture shows the man whose work repeatedly pushed sculpture away from academic polish.
