Walter P. Chrysler is the subject here, the automobile executive who put his name on the Chrysler Corporation after taking control of it in the 1920s. Known for turning the company into one of the "Big Three" American automakers, he rose from railroad machinist to head of Maxwell Motors and then Chrysler, and he later oversaw the Chrysler Building in New York, completed in 1930. The caption card does not record a date, so the portrait's exact year is uncertain, but it belongs to a period when Chrysler was a prominent figure in American industry and the press.
