John Singleton Copley, the Boston-born painter, is the figure this print puts at its center, and his name is the one detail the record gives us beyond the medium. Copley (1738 to 1815) became one of colonial America's most accomplished portraitists, known for lifelike sitters painted with close attention to fabric, skin and light. Before the Revolution he worked mainly in Boston, then moved to London in 1774, where he spent the rest of his career. Because the caption card lists no date, the exact year of this impression is uncertain, but prints of his portraits were widely circulated in the nineteenth century.
