John Pierpont Morgan, the financier whose banking house shaped American industry at the turn of the twentieth century, sits for this portrait around 1911, near the height of his public influence. By then he had helped engineer the formation of United States Steel and other major consolidations, and he was among the most recognizable figures in New York business. Photographs of him from this period often emphasize the heavy brow, direct gaze and formal bearing that made him a symbol of concentrated financial power, and this print gives a useful sense of how the era chose to present its great capitalists.
